Internet: Why has my Internet slowed down?

Slow speed issues happen for many reasons. Some sites might not be built to handle heavy traffic, peer-to-peer file sharing can cause slowdowns, and so can applications or spyware running in the background. You can read more about what can your Internet down after trying these troubleshooting tips.

Test your speed

Check your speed using the Speed Test usage tool. When you check your speed, make sure your computer is connected directly to your modem via an Ethernet cable. How do the results compare with the advertised speed for your Internet Package?

If the speeds you’re seeing don’t match your advertised package speeds, reset your modem and/or your router and modem.

Check your Cable Connections

(this is for cable internet only)

If you are connecting to your modem directly and still having issues:

  1. Disconnect and reconnect each cable connection leading into your modem and the Ethernet cable connected to your computer. Ensure they are in the correct spot and properly connected.
  2. Check the Ethernet cable for damage.
  3. If you have cable Internet, check the coaxial cable. Ensure that it is tightly connected. Inspect it for damage as that can also cause connectivity issues. If your cable is connected to a splitter try bypassing the splitter.
  4. Restart your computer
  5. Run a Speed Test again

Windows Users: Try Safe Mode with Networking

If you use the Windows operating system for your computer, try starting your computer in Safe Mode with Networking.

  1. Restart your computer
  2. Tap the F8 button as it turns back on (you may have to tap it more than once)
  3. You will see the option to start your computer in Safe Mode with Networking
  4. Run a Speed Test

If you can reach the advertised speed while in safe mode, then your computer is creating the problem.
