NHL Blackouts Explained

NHL Centre Ice: Blackouts Apply

NHL Centre Ice does not broadcast games within the same region as a Regional or National Broadcaster.

Regional Broadcasters: TSN3, TSN4, TSN5, Sportsnet (Pacific/West/Ontario/East/SN Vancouver/SN Flames/SN Oilers)

National Broadcasters: CBC, Sportsnet One, Sportsnet 360, and City TV.

NHL Centre Ice Blackouts due to regional/national broadcasts:

  • Vancouver Canucks games will be blacked out in BC and the Yukon.
  • Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers games will be blacked out in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories & Nunavut
  • Winnipeg Jets games are blacked out in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories & Nunavut
  • Toronto Maple Leafs games are blacked out in Ontario (excludes Ottawa Region)
  • Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens games are blacked out in Quebec, Ottawa region, and Atlantic Canada

NHL Centre Ice does not have the rights to broadcast games aired on NBCSN.

NHL Regional Channel Blackouts

Blackouts are the result of broadcasting restrictions imposed by broadcasters, professional sports teams and their leagues. Blackouts are set for city centres, typically within 50 km, or for regions, which can include provinces and territories. Each league has different blackout rules that can change at any time. Blackouts can also apply to PPV sporting events.

Sportsnet NHL Blackouts:
Rogers Sportsnet has their own broadcasting restrictions that allow a broadcaster, team, or the NHL to protect the local playback of a game by imposing a blackout to areas outside of the specific team region.

Vancouver Canucks:
Any Vancouver Canuck games on Sportsnet Pacific or the Sportsnet ONE companion channel, Sportsnet Vancouver Hockey, can only be seen in British Columbia and the Yukon.

If you live in High Level, Fort Smith, Norman Wells or Yellowknife, Canucks games can be seen on NHL Center Ice.

Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers
Any Calgary Flames or Edmonton Oilers games on Sportsnet West or the Sportsnet ONE companion channels Sportsnet Flames and Sportsnet Oilers can only be seen in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

If you live in Whitehorse, Carcross or Fort Nelson, these games can be viewed on NHL Center Ice.

Toronto Maple Leafs:
Official Broadcaster of the Leafs has expanded its Leafs coverage and is now available in an
area spanning from Petawawa in the North to Kingston in the East. Viewers with one Sportsnet channel, living West of a line drawn from Sudbury in the North and Brighton to the South will only be able to access Toronto Maple Leafs games on Sportsnet Ontario.

Northwestel customers can only view these games on NHL Center Ice.

Montreal Canadiens:
Any Montreal Canadiens games on Sportsnet East or City Montreal can only be seen in Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada.

Northwestel customers can only view these games on NHL Center Ice.

TSN Regional Blackouts:

TSN will offer regional hockey content on TSN 3,4 and 5. These regional feeds will be subject to the NHL’s blackout restrictions.

Unfortunately, blacked out games will continue to appear in the programming guide for all customers.

The general guidelines are as follows:

TSN3
Winnipeg Jets games on TSN3 will only be available to customers in the Northwest Territories. It will be blacked out for customers in the Yukon, BC and Alberta.

These games will be available to customers in Whitehorse and Fort Nelson through the NHL Centre Ice package.

TSN4
Toronto Maple Leafs games on TSN4 will only be available to customers in Ontario and the Ottawa region. All Leafs games on TSN4 will be blacked out for customers in the Northwest Territories, the Yukon, BC and Alberta.

These games will be available to customers in Whitehorse, Yellowknife and Fort Nelson through the NHL Centre Ice package.

TSN5
Ottawa Senators games on TSN5 will only be available to customers in South Eastern Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada. All Senators games on TSN5 will be blacked out for customers in the Northwest Territories, the Yukon, BC and Alberta.

These games will be available to customers in Whitehorse, Yellowknife and Fort Nelson through the NHL Centre Ice package.

RDS
Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens games featured on RDS will only be available to customers in Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada. All games on RDS will be blacked out for customers in the Northwest Territories, the Yukon, BC and Alberta.

These games will be available to customers in Whitehorse, Yellowknife and Fort Nelson through the NHL Centre Ice package.
